Manchester United secured a 4-1 victory over bottom-club Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday, climbing to sixth in the Premier League. Captain Bruno Fernandes was the star, scoring twice in the comfortable win at Molineux, while Wolves' season continues its calamitous trajectory.
Fernandes (25', penalty), Jean-Ricner Bellegarde (45'+), Bryan Mbeumo (52'), Mason Mount (63'). Dispirited Wolves fans protested against the club's Chinese owners, Fosun, during the first half. Wolves equalised in first-half stoppage time through Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, ending a 540-minute goal drought.
Bryan Mbeumo restored the lead, followed by Mason Mount's composed finish, and Fernandes sealed the win with a penalty after a VAR-spotted handball. Ruben Amorim's United registered 27 goal attempts, their highest under his charge.
United now have 25 points from 15 games. The loss is Wolves' club-record eighth successive league defeat and 13th of the season, leaving them marooned on two points. Their point tally is the joint-lowest after 15 games in the history of England's top four tiers. They are 13 points from safety and face potentially setting the lowest-ever Premier League points haul (Derby County's 11 in 2007-08).
Wolves manager Rob Edwards accepted the fans' anger, stating he didn't anticipate a quick turnaround given the team hadn't won since April. Wolves' misery is set to continue with a trip to Premier League leaders Arsenal next.
