Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has stated that the families of those martyred in the July-August uprising will be honored as the "crowns" of the nation. He also called for the speedy trial of those responsible for the killings.
The Jamaat chief made these remarks on Saturday morning (January 24) after visiting the grave of Abu Sayeed, the first martyr of the student-led quota reform movement, in Babanpur village, Pirganj.
Addressing a gathering in Pirganj, Dr. Rahman pledged to protect Bangladesh’s sovereignty at any cost. "We are ready to give our lives just as Abu Sayeed did," he said. "We will not mortgage an inch of our country’s honor to anyone."
He emphasized that Abu Sayeed represents the nation's collective emotions. "The martyrs envisioned a Bangladesh free from corruption, terrorism, and fascism—a humane country where people of all faiths live in peace. We are committed to establishing the justice they fought for," he added.
Referring to the political landscape following the fall of the former regime on August 5, the Ameer claimed his party has shunned revenge and corruption. "We have no personal agenda. Our goal is to end national division and unite the country," he stated.
Regarding the upcoming elections, Dr. Rahman confirmed that a 10-party alliance has reached a consensus to field candidates across all 300 constituencies through mutual cooperation. He urged the youth to act as "watchmen" during the polls to prevent any manipulation of voting rights.
Earlier, Dr. Rahman offered prayers at Abu Sayeed’s grave, accompanied by the martyr’s father, Maqbul Hossain, and National Citizens Committee Member Secretary Akhter Hossain. This visit marks the third day of his election campaign, which included rallies in Panchagarh, Thakurgaon, and Dinajpur. He is scheduled to hold further meetings in Gaibandha, Sirajganj, and Pabna before returning to Dhaka.
