Following his historic return to Bangladesh after nearly 17 years in exile, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman paid profound tributes to the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War at the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar on Friday night.
His journey to Savar was significantly delayed as thousands of supporters lined the streets from Dhaka to greet him. Although senior BNP leaders placed a wreath on his behalf at 5:06 PM to observe official sunset protocols, Tarique Rahman personally arrived at the memorial at 10:00 PM to lay a floral wreath and sign the visitors' book.
Earlier in the evening, an emotional scene unfolded at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar as Tarique Rahman visited the grave of his father, BNP founder Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. Standing at the site for the first time in 19 years, the BNP leader was seen shedding tears while offering prayers.
Accompanied by senior party figures, including Goyeshwar Chandra Roy and Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, Tarique Rahman expressed his gratitude to the public and law enforcement for their patience during the massive road congestion caused by his arrival.
This visit follows a momentous public reception on Thursday and a visit to his ailing mother, Begum Khaleda Zia, at Evercare Hospital.
