BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh today, December 25, 2025, after more than 17 years in exile. His arrival at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport marked a highly emotional moment in the country's political history.
Upon exiting the airport VIP lounge at approximately 12:30 pm, Tarique Rahman performed a symbolic act of devotion by removing his shoes and stepping barefoot onto the dew-soaked grass and soil. He was observed picking up a handful of earth and sniffing it, visibly moved by his return.
At around 12:40 pm, he boarded a special bulletproof bus decorated in the national colors of red and green. The bus, featuring large portraits of the party’s leadership, began its slow journey toward the 300-Foot Road (July 36 Expressway) for a mass reception.
Thousands of activists and supporters lined the entire 13-kilometer stretch from the airport to the venue. Tarique stood at the front of the bus, waving to the cheering crowds who had gathered from across the country.
The motorcade moved under a four-tier security umbrella provided by law enforcement agencies and the party’s internal security force.
Earlier, his wife, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, and daughter, Zaima Rahman, departed the airport separately for their Gulshan residence.
