Emergency Workers Excluded from Extended August Holidays

Government employees in Bangladesh can enjoy a four-day weekend this August by combining the "July Mass Uprising Day" general holiday with a casual leave and the regular weekend. However employees in emergency and essential public service sectors will not receive this benefit as they must maintain uninterrupted services for the public.

According to the Ministry of Public Administration’s 2026 holiday calendar August 5 (Wednesday) is a designated general holiday. By taking a casual leave on August 6 (Thursday), government staff can link it to the August 7 and 8 weekend for a consecutive four-day break.

Despite this, policy restrictions prevent essential workers from taking this extended time off. Ministry sources confirm the casual leave option does not apply to organizations providing critical services. This includes personnel in hospitals law enforcement fire services electricity gas water supply ports airports public transport prisons and disaster management.

Departments requiring continuous operation will strictly manage their duty rosters preventing staff from taking leave simultaneously to ensure public services remain active.

Similarly emergency service personnel will be excluded from extended leave during the general holiday for the holy Eid-e-Miladunnabi (PBUH) scheduled for August 26.
