The government has introduced a series of measures to prevent the damage and wastage of sacrificial animal hides during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha. As part of these initiatives, the Ministry of Commerce has opened a dedicated control room to oversee the management process, according to a ministry notification issued Sunday.
The decision follows an inter-ministerial meeting held on April 12, 2026. To raise public awareness, the government will broadcast text alerts across all national television channels. These alerts will guide citizens on proper skinning techniques, applying adequate salt immediately after skinning, and ensuring proper preservation.
Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir stated that all necessary preparations are in place for the collection, storage, sale, and transport of raw hides.
"The Prime Minister has stressed that not a single sacrificial hide should be wasted," the Minister said, noting that the government views this as a national responsibility. "Sacrificial hides are a valuable national asset. Proper preservation directly boosts our leather industry, drives export earnings, and financially supports local orphanages and madrasas. Yet, a lack of awareness leads to significant waste every year. We have taken extensive measures to change that."
Eid-ul-Azha, the second-largest religious festival for Muslims, will be celebrated in Bangladesh on May 28, 2026.
