Today (May 24) is the last working day for government employees before the holy Eid-ul-Azha. A seven-day public holiday will begin on Monday, May 25, and continue until May 31.
The government had initially announced a six-day Eid holiday surrounding Eid-ul-Azha, which will be celebrated on May 28. According to the official holiday calendar, Eid day itself is a public holiday.
The extended break includes holidays on May 26 and 27 before Eid, and from May 29 to 31 after Eid, through executive orders. Later, considering previous Eid travel experiences and to ease passenger movement, the Advisory Council approved an additional holiday on May 25 during its May 7 meeting. To adjust the schedule, government offices remained open on May 23 and 24.
Following the decision, the Ministry of Public Administration issued an official notification on May 14 confirming the seven-day holiday.
According to the notification, government, semi-government, autonomous, semi-autonomous and private offices across the country will remain closed from May 25 to May 31 for Eid-ul-Azha.
However, emergency services will remain operational. These include electricity, water, gas and fuel supply, fire service, port operations, sanitation services, telephone and internet services, postal services, transport services and related personnel.
Hospitals and emergency medical services will also remain outside the holiday coverage. Doctors, healthcare workers and transport services involved in carrying medicines and medical equipment will continue operations.
Eid-ul-Azha, one of the two biggest religious festivals for Muslims, will be celebrated nationwide on May 28.
