US President Donald Trump has sharply criticised NATO allies, calling them “cowards” for refusing to assist in reopening the Strait of Hormuz, as the conflict with Iran continues to escalate into its fourth week.

The remarks came amid reports that the United States is preparing to deploy additional warships and thousands of troops to the Middle East. Washington is also reportedly considering military options targeting Iran’s strategic Kharg Island, a key oil export hub responsible for প্রায় 90% of Iran’s crude shipments.

Despite earlier reluctance to commit ground troops, US officials are now weighing more aggressive actions, including a possible blockade or occupation of the island. However, such a move carries significant risks, as it could expose US forces to Iranian drone and missile attacks.

On the ground, hostilities are intensifying across the region. Iran has issued strong warnings, with military officials threatening to target US and Israeli personnel globally. At the same time, Iranian forces have expanded attacks on energy infrastructure in Gulf countries, including drone strikes on Kuwait’s Mina al-Ahmadi refinery.

Israel has continued its offensive, striking Iranian targets, cargo vessels, and regional positions, including in Syria. Iran has responded with missile barrages targeting Israeli cities such as Tel Aviv and Haifa, further escalating tensions.

The conflict has also disrupted global energy markets. Attacks on Iran’s South Pars gas field and regional oil facilities have driven up oil and gas prices, raising concerns about a wider economic shock.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon has already deployed the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, while the USS Boxer amphibious assault ship is heading to the region ahead of schedule. However, officials have not confirmed specific missions.

Iran’s new supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, signalled a hardline stance, warning that adversaries would face consequences and indicating no immediate path to de-escalation.

With rising military activity, conflicting signals from Washington, and continued strikes across multiple countries, the situation remains volatile, with growing fears of a prolonged war and deeper global economic fallout.
