A recent earthquake, described as a "6th-decade" event, struck western Turkey. The disaster and emergency agency AFAD reported the epicenter near the city of Sındırgı in the Balıkesir province, with a shallow depth of just $5$ kilometers.
The tremors were felt across several major provinces, including Istanbul, Bursa, Manisa, and İzmir. AFAD confirmed that multiple homes in Sındırgı were destroyed or damaged. Crucially, there are no reported casualties or injuries so far.
This event follows a previous "6th-decade" earthquake in August, which also had its epicenter in Sındırgı, indicating an ongoing period of seismic activity in the Balıkesir region.
Turkey is prone to such disasters due to its location on a large tectonic fault line. This is underscored by the devastating magnitude $7.8$ earthquake in 2023 that killed over $53,000$ people in Turkey and at least $6,000$ in northern Syria.
