The new American drama film, "Train Dreams," based on Denis Johnson’s acclaimed 2011 novella, is being praised for its emotional depth and quiet intensity.
Starring Australian actor Joel Edgerton as the protagonist, Robert Grainer, the movie is described by Edgerton as a "Western epic sort of celebration of an ordinary life." The film is set in the 1900s and chronicles the life of Grainer, an American logger who helps develop railroads across the United States. His work requires him to spend long periods away from his wife, Gladys Grainer (played by Felicity Jones), and their infant daughter.
Edgerton remarked that relating to Robert's struggles with work-life balance was surprisingly easy, stating, "I know what it is to be in love... And I wrestle with how to marry work and life, and I felt like Robert was just me with an ax in his hand."
Director Clint Bentley commended Edgerton’s powerful yet humble acting style, specifically his ability to convey profound emotion through minimal action. Bentley noted that Edgerton "can do so much with so little" and "can break your heart with just a look off in the distance or stumbling over a line."
"Train Dreams" is currently in a limited theatrical run and is scheduled to begin streaming globally on Netflix (NFLX.O) on November 21.
