A six-month-old infant has died of measles while undergoing treatment at the Faridpur Medical College Hospital, highlighting a worrying spike in infections across the region.
Hospital officials confirmed on Tuesday that the deceased infant, identified as Jannati, was the daughter of Nur Haque from Kabirajpur village in the Rajoir Upazila of neighboring Madaripur district.
The child was rushed to the hospital on May 24 with severe complications arising from measles and passed away despite receiving emergency pediatric care.
With this latest tragedy, the total number of children lost to the current measles outbreak in Faridpur has risen to 14, according to Faridpur Civil Surgeon Dr. Mahmudul Hasan.
"We are witnessing dangerous clusters of infections," Dr. Hasan stated. "On instructions from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), our medical teams are actively running field awareness campaigns and emergency mop-up vaccination drives in high-risk zones to prevent further transmission."
Public health officials urge parents to immediately bring any child showing symptoms—such as high fever, runny nose, cough, watery eyes, and widespread red rashes—to the nearest community clinic or state hospital, emphasizing that timely vaccination remains the only effective shield against the disease.
