Canal excavation work has officially begun in Jalalpur Union of Satkhira's Tala upazila. The initiative aims to improve local water management and develop rural infrastructure, fulfilling a key pledge from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's election manifesto.
Implemented by the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), the project will restore the 1,380-meter Jethua Gher Canal and the 740-meter Dudh Canal. LGED Executive Engineer ASM Tariqul Hasan Khan inaugurated the excavation work on Wednesday.
Local officials and public representatives emphasized the project's potential to revitalize the region. Jalalpur UP Chairman M. Mofidul Haque Litu stated that re-excavating the canals will boost agricultural production, resolve water drainage issues, and help combat the adverse effects of climate change.
"Canals were once the lifeblood of our agriculture and rural economy," said Executive Engineer Khan. "Restoring them will create immediate local employment and drive long-term development in the agriculture, fisheries, and livestock sectors."
Upazila Engineer Rathindra Nath Halder confirmed that similar canal excavation projects will be introduced across all unions in Tala upazila in phases.
