Water Resources Minister and Lakshmipur-3 MP Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee announced that a canal excavation program will begin soon to tackle waterlogging in Lakshmipur. He said a special project will re-excavate the Bhulua River and Rahmatkhali Canal to ease flooding in the district.

The minister made the announcement after meeting district administration officials at the Lakshmipur Circuit House on Friday morning (February 20).

“Waterlogging has been a long-standing problem in Lakshmipur,” Anee said. “Our priority is to launch a new project for dredging the Bhulua River and re-excavating the Rahmatkhali Canal. Once completed, this will solve the waterlogging issue that has caused suffering for years. A special plan is required, and we are moving ahead with it.”

He added that the 180-day canal excavation project across the country will start soon, with Lakshmipur included.

On river erosion, the minister said authorities have been asked to conduct feasibility studies to prevent erosion along the Meghna River and Rahmatkhali Canal banks.

Anee also emphasized long-term development in Lakshmipur, saying, “We aim to improve education, health, communication, and other infrastructure through continuous projects. Lakshmipur has been neglected for a long time, and we want to transform it into a modern and beautiful district.”

Regarding law and order and commodity prices, he added that the Prime Minister has instructed authorities to maintain discipline and keep prices stable during Ramadan. He also stressed improving medical facilities at Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital, describing healthcare as a fundamental right.

Responding to concerns about road extortion, Anee stated, “There is no opportunity for extortion in Bangladesh, including Lakshmipur.”

This was Shahid Uddin Chowdhury’s first visit to his constituency as minister. He received a guard of honor from the district administration and was welcomed with flowers by local officials, party leaders, and community representatives. Later, Minister Anee Chowdhury was greeted with flowers by Deputy Commissioner SM Mehedi Hasan, District Police Superintendent Md. Abu Tarek, District BNP Member Secretary Shahabuddin Sabu, Joint Convener Hasibur Rahman, BFF Vice President Wahid Uddin Chowdhury Happy, Former Chairman of Lakshmipur Municipality Hasanuzzaman Chowdhury Mintu, among others.
