The body of university student Nafiul Karim Sohan has been exhumed from his grave in Faridpur upazila of Pabna, nearly eight months after his death, as part of a renewed murder investigation.
The exhumation took place on Tuesday afternoon following allegations that Sohan was killed by strangulation. A three-member medical board, led by Pabna District Executive Magistrate Pranoy Kumar Bir, oversaw the process. The body was later sent for autopsy. Officer-in-Charge of Faridpur Police Station Md Shamim Akonji was present during the operation.
Nafiul Karim Sohan, a student of the Pharmacy Department at Gono University, was a resident of Dighulia village in Faridpur upazila. His family found him dead at home on the morning of June 9 last year after he failed to wake up.
According to his mother, Nasima Akhter, Sohan had been involved in a long-standing dispute with his uncles—identified as Ibrahim Hossain and Nazrul Islam—and cousins over the purchase of land in front of their house. She alleged that during a public argument on April 24 last year over cutting soil from the disputed land, Sohan was threatened with death.
Family members said Sohan returned home on June 5 and went to sleep after dinner on the night of June 8. His body was found the following morning. They alleged that his uncle and cousins strangled him to death.
On August 4 last year, Nasima Akhter filed a murder case with the Senior Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Pabna under Sections 302 and 34 of the Penal Code, accusing six people.
The exhumation has drawn significant attention in the area. The victim’s family has demanded a swift, impartial investigation and exemplary punishment for those responsible.
