Jamaat's 'Yes' vote campaign meeting attacked in Chauddagram, freedom fighter's car vandalized

BNP workers attacked a courtyard meeting of Jamaat's 'Yes' referendum campaign in Chauddagram, Comilla. The incident took place on Tuesday night in Bhatbari village of Ujirpur union of the upazila. The attackers vandalized the car of freedom fighter Aktaruzzaman, set a motorcycle on fire and threw several cocktails, spreading panic.

According to local sources, a courtyard meeting was held at Maulana Abdul Karim's house in Bhatbari Dakshin Para of Ujirpur union on Tuesday night to campaign for 'Yes' vote in the referendum on the day of the 13th National Parliament election.

Former Ameer of Upazila Jamaat, freedom fighter Md. Aktaruzzaman, was the chief guest. The leaders and activists of the village, including Maulana Zillur Rahman, president of the Ulama Department of the Union Jamaat, participated in it. Upon receiving the news, BNP workers gathered and burst cocktails and created panic. At one point, they vandalized the microbus used by the freedom fighter Akhtaruzzaman and set fire to Maulana Zillur Rahman's motorcycle. In addition, some Jamaat members were injured when they threw bricks. A team of police reached the spot after hearing the news of the attack and controlled the situation.

Regarding the attack, Upazila BNP General Secretary Engineer Shah Alam Raju said, none of us did this incident. Jamaat itself created the incident. They are busy keeping the law and order forces busy by causing incidents in the northern region.

Upazila Jamaat Secretary Belal Hossain said, isolated BNP workers attacked Jamaat-Shibir leaders and activists on the orders of their leader and set fire to the office. He also claimed that people will respond to this attack through the upcoming February 12 ballot.

Chauddagram Model Police Station Inspector Investigation Md. Gulzar Alam said on Wednesday afternoon, "After receiving the news of the incident, the police went and brought the situation under control. Currently, the situation is normal."
