A devastating fire erupted in a garage complex in Sreepur, Gazipur, early Tuesday morning, resulting in an estimated loss of around half a crore taka (5 million BDT). The blaze, which started around 4:30 am on Tuesday (December 2), quickly engulfed multiple structures.
The fire originated near a tea shop located next to the garage, quickly spreading to a sound box shop, a grocery store, and an auto garage owned by local BNP leader Abul Munsur Mandal.
A total of 15 autorickshaws kept in the garage were burnt to ashes, though the Fire Service initially reported 20 vehicles destroyed. The fire consumed a welding mixer machine (valued at about 4 lakh taka), a shop's valuable sound box and microphone (loss estimated at 1 million taka), and all the goods of the nearby grocery and tea shops.
Personnel from two units of the Mauna Fire Service in Sreepur rushed to the scene. According to warehouse inspector Mohammad Nurul Karim, it took approximately half an hour to bring the intense fire under control.
The damage has severely impacted multiple low-income business owners and autorickshaw drivers, many of whom reported buying their vehicles using NGO loans and installment payments. The total financial loss claimed by the affected garage owners, shop owners, and autorickshaw owners is approximately 5 million taka.
