A traffic police box was set on fire in Gazipur’s Konabari on Sunday morning after clashes erupted between police and protesting readymade garment (RMG) workers demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk.30,000.
The incident occurred around 10:00 AM when factory workers blocked the main highway in Konabari. Clashes broke out after law enforcement officers attempted to disperse the crowd and clear the road for traffic.
During the clash, angry demonstrators smashed the glass windows of a nearby police traffic box before setting it ablaze. Gazipur Metropolitan Police Deputy Police Commissioner (Traffic) Md Ashraful confirmed that the structure, primarily used by duty officers for rest, suffered internal damage to its furniture. No major valuables were stored inside and no casualties were immediately reported.
Industrial unrest has flared across key areas of Gazipur including Konabari, Shafipur, Mouchak and Palli Bidyut since Saturday also disrupting transport links along the industrial belt. Police and security forces remain deployed across the affected zones to control the situation and restore highway traffic.
