A 35-year-old man died after being severely beaten by a mob on suspicion of cattle theft in Phulbari Upazila of Dinajpur. Police have arrested one individual in connection with the killing.
The victim was identified as Ruhul Amin. On Sunday morning his father Shafiqul Islam filed a murder case at the Phulbari Police Station.
According to police and local sources, the incident began on Friday morning when locals intercepted Khorshed, a relative of Ruhul, while he was walking near the Phulbari municipal market with a cow that had strayed from a neighbor’s shed. Suspecting theft, a crowd brought Khorshed to the Nauyar Mor area of Amrabari village and began assaulting him.
When Ruhul Amin intervened to protect his cousin, the mob accused him of involvement and severely beat him, causing critical head injuries. Family members rescued Ruhul and rushed him to the Phulbari Upazila Health Complex. Due to his worsening condition, he was transferred first to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital and later to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries late Friday night.
Tensions mounted in the area on Saturday, prompting several accused individuals to flee. Phulbari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shahidul Islam confirmed that police responded following a 999 emergency call. Officers have arrested one suspect, identified as 25-year-old Mehedi Hasan and raids are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects.
