A 13-year-old schoolboy, Ishayat Shahriar Apratim was brutally murdered in Cumilla solely for his mother's iPhone Police said on Sunday.
Cumilla Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammad Anisuzzaman stated that four suspects Tuhin, Fahad, Kamrul and Siam have been arrested and the stolen device was recovered. During a press briefing the SP revealed that Tuhin, Fahad and Kamrul fatally struck the teenager's head with a bamboo stick before fleeing.
Apratim the only child of Cumilla University (CUB) Associate Professor Nahida Begum and businessman KM Firoz Shahriar went missing on Friday while taking photos in the Kotbari area. His body was found Saturday afternoon in a bush in nearby Sananda village. His father has since filed a murder case with the Sadar South Model Police Station.
Following the boy's namaz-e-janaza at the CUB campus on Sunday morning, outraged university students blocked the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Kotbari for two hours causing severe traffic congestion.
The protesters eventually lifted the blockade after issuing a four-point demand. They called for the completion of the murder trial within 60 days and the withdrawal of the Cumilla SP and local police chiefs also citing their failure to rescue the boy alive.
Furthermore, the students demanded the establishment of a permanent police outpost near the university and the formation of an advanced missing-persons unit and enhanced security measures including extensive CCTV coverage across the area.
