The former founding president of BNP’s Dhaka North City unit and BNP Secretary for Microcredit Affairs, Dr MA Kaiyum, has said teachers, parents and students must work together to improve the quality of education.
“Alongside being attentive to their studies, students need to be more focused, while teachers must also take greater care of them. Necessary measures will be taken against those who remain indifferent to improving the quality of education,” he said.
Dr Kaiyum made the remarks while speaking as the chief discussant at a reception and award-giving ceremony for meritorious students at Badda Alatunnesa Higher Secondary School in the capital on Thursday.
Congratulating the meritorious students, Dr Kaiyum expressed hope that they would achieve even better results in the future. He also called on all concerned to ensure that no talented student is forced to discontinue education due to financial hardship.
At the programme, Dr Kaiyum announced a monthly donation of Tk 100,000 from the Abdul Hai-Rabeya Foundation to support poor and meritorious students of the school.
A similar assistance programme for poor and meritorious students of Badda High School had also been announced earlier.
Presided over by MA Matin, chairman of the school’s ad hoc committee, the programme was attended by teachers, members of the managing committee, guardians, local dignitaries and students.
Dr Kaiyum said the country must be taken forward through education, irrespective of political affiliation.
“An educated and skilled generation can enrich the future of the country. Therefore, teachers, parents and all concerned must play a responsible role in ensuring a proper and supportive educational environment for students,” he said.
He also highlighted the need to renovate the school’s boundary wall and playground and sought the cooperation of the chief guest in taking necessary steps for the infrastructural development of the institution.
Speaking as the chief guest, reserved women’s seat MP Shammi Akhter said the announcement of a monthly Tk 100,000 donation for poor and meritorious students was an important initiative.
“Such support for the expansion of education will help students move forward,” she said.
Recalling her childhood, Shammi said such programmes reminded her of her early days.
“I used to recite poems by Kazi Nazrul Islam during my childhood. Education and cultural activities help develop children’s talents and intellectual abilities,” she said.
She said today’s children are the future of the country and that some of them would become doctors, teachers, politicians or civil servants and contribute to running the country.
“Therefore, ensuring proper education and a congenial environment for children is the responsibility of everyone,” she said.
Regarding the renovation of the school’s boundary wall and playground, Shammi said she would discuss the matter with the education minister and try to take necessary measures.
She also urged teachers to be more attentive and caring towards their students.
Speaking about the progress of women’s education, Shammi said women had gained greater opportunities to advance in the education sector as a result of the education policies of BNP Chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
She said women’s participation in education has increased significantly and expressed hope that women would play an even more important role in leading the country in the future.
