Switzerland has advanced to their first FIFA World Cup quarter-final since 1954 after a thrilling 4-3 penalty shootout victory against Colombia. The match ended goalless after a tense 120 minutes of regular and extra time at a packed BC Place in Vancouver.
Despite losing breakout star Johan Manzambi to a pre-match training injury, the Swiss displayed exceptional defensive resilience. Colombia dominated the atmosphere, backed by an overwhelmingly yellow-clad crowd of 52,497 fans and created dangerous opportunities. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made several critical saves, including a brilliant stop from Gustavo Puerta, while Colombia's Jhon Lucumi saw a powerful extra-time header crash off the crossbar.
The deadlock forced a dramatic shootout. The momentum swung decisively in Switzerland's favor when Colombia’s Davinson Sánchez hit the crossbar and Kobel saved an attempt from Cucho Hernández. Although Switzerland's Manuel Akanji missed his shot, Ruben Vargas stepped up to calmly slot home the decisive penalty.
The victory breaks a long-standing jinx for Switzerland, who had been eliminated in the Round of 16 in four of the last five World Cups.
Switzerland will now face defending champions Argentina on Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, following Argentina's 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt.
