Manchester United moved a step closer to Champions League qualification on Monday with a 2-1 victory over Brentford at Old Trafford. Goals from Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko lifted United to third place, leaving them just two points away from mathematically securing a return to Europe’s elite competition.
Despite the advantage, interim manager Michael Carrick was quick to temper expectations.
"The Champions League is one thing, but it’s not something we should be over-celebrating," Carrick said. "We want to be challenging high up the league and getting more points so our season doesn't just end once we qualify."
Carrick, who took over in January following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal, has guided the club from sixth to third. United now sit 11 points clear of sixth-placed Brighton with four games remaining. Since the top five teams qualify this year, United’s return after a two-year absence is nearly guaranteed.
The match also highlighted the impending departure of Casemiro. Despite fans chanting for the Brazilian to stay after his ninth goal of the season, Carrick confirmed there would be no U-turn on his exit this summer.
"From both sides, the situation is clear," Carrick noted. "That clarity has helped. He has given everything and had some massive moments for us."
United face a crucial test this Sunday against fourth-placed Liverpool.
