The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has urged the interim government, headed by Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, to adopt the full responsibilities and functions of a caretaker government to ensure the upcoming February national election is free, fair, and acceptable.
Following a meeting with Dr. Yunus, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the party's demands, which center on establishing a neutral administration. The BNP specifically called for the removal of "fascist allies"—officials allegedly affiliated with the previous government—from key government bodies, including the Secretariat, district administration, and the judiciary (particularly the higher judiciary). The party insists these officials be replaced with neutral officers and judges.
Furthermore, the BNP demanded neutrality in the recruitment and promotion of police officers to ensure an impartial environment ahead of the polls. The party stressed that the interim government must demonstrate a commitment to neutrality to gain public confidence as it moves toward an election conducted in the spirit of a caretaker administration.
