The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has issued a security advisory for residents leaving the capital for Eid-ul-Fitr, suggesting they store cash and gold at police stations if they cannot leave them with trusted relatives.
DMP Acting Commissioner Md. Sarwar announced the measure during a press conference at the DMP Media Center on Sunday, March 15. The briefing focused on ensuring safe travels and maintaining security in the city during the holiday period.
"Do not leave cash, gold ornaments, or important documents unattended at home," the Acting Commissioner urged. "If you have no relatives in Dhaka to guard these items, you may leave them at your local police station for safekeeping."
To prevent domestic thefts and accidents, the DMP advised citizens to Secure all doors and windows firmly. Double-check electricity, gas, and water connections. Activate or install CCTV cameras. Ensure adequate exterior lighting at night.
Police have intensified patrols to secure the "empty" capital. Over 300 motorcycle and car units are conducting mobile patrols daily, supported by 70 nighttime checkpoints and active foot patrols. Residential, commercial, and diplomatic zones are under special surveillance.
Special security is now active at Dhaka’s four bus terminals, the launch terminal, and the railway station. Both uniformed and detective police are monitoring these hubs to prevent passenger harassment and overcharging.
Additionally, 1,000 extra officers are stationed at shopping malls from morning until late night to deter muggers and "malam parties." To prevent reckless driving on deserted roads, mobile courts will be operational on the Purbachal Expressway, the Banani-Abdullahpur stretch, and in Gulshan during the Eid holidays.
