Two explosions rocked the Syrian capital of Damascus on Tuesday near the hotel where French President Emmanuel Macron is staying. The blasts injured at least 18 people, including four police officers, according to the Syrian Interior Ministry.
The explosions occurred near the Ministry of Tourism and the Four Seasons Hotel. President Macron’s motorcade had left the area 15 minutes before the detonations and officials confirmed that the French delegation was safe.
The delegation was en route to a scheduled meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, which proceeded on time. The program of the French president's visit remains unchanged.
Syria's Al-Ikhbaria TV reported that the blasts were caused by two improvised explosive devices (IEDs). According to the Syrian Interior Ministry, the devices detonated after internal security forces discovered them and experts began the defusing process. Internal security forces are currently investigating the incident to identify those responsible.
