Bangladesh has officially joined a new 14-nation maritime security alliance spearheaded by Saudi Arabia. The coalition aims to protect international shipping and vital energy supply lines across the strategically important Bab al-Mandab Strait, the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

The Saudi Ministry of Defence formally announced the initiative in Riyadh following a defense meeting attended by delegates from 43 countries and the European Union. Alongside Bangladesh the alliance includes Bahrain Djibouti Egypt Jordan Kuwait Nigeria, Pakistan Qatar Saudi Arabia Somalia Sudan Türkiye and Yemen.

The formation of this coalition comes in direct response to escalating regional tensions. Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement recently threatened to impose a maritime embargo on Saudi Arabia specifically warning they would target Saudi oil tankers operating in the Red Sea and oil infrastructure inside the kingdom. Recent cross-border attacks between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis have also raised serious concerns about the collapse of the fragile 2022 ceasefire.

Securing the Bab al-Mandab Strait is critical for the global economy. The corridor seamlessly connects the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean serving as a crucial transit route for international trade and an essential alternative for Saudi oil exports following past disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

By joining this coalition Bangladesh underscores its commitment to international maritime security helping to ensure the uninterrupted flow of global trade through one of the world's most vulnerable economic arteries.
