Approximately 130 people were forced to shelter overnight at a mountaintop shrine in Saitama Prefecture after heavy snowfall and icy roads cut off access to the region.
The travelers, occupying about 50 vehicles, spent Friday night in the halls and lobbies of the Mitsumine Shrine after local police closed surrounding roads due to multiple accidents. Officials confirmed that while temperatures dropped as low as -15°C (5°F), no illnesses or injuries were reported among those stranded.
Japan is currently battling a severe cold front. The Japan Meteorological Agency reports that some areas have seen up to 80cm (31 inches) of snow over the last three days, with another 40cm (16 inches) forecast for Saturday.
The Mitsumine Shrine, located 1,110 meters above sea level, is a historic Shinto site dedicated to Japan’s creator deities. While a popular destination for worshipers, its high altitude and steep access roads make it particularly vulnerable to sudden winter weather shifts.
Authorities are monitoring the cold front as they work to clear roads for the safe evacuation of the shrine’s temporary residents.
