Move over, pop-up tents and muddy boots. At this year's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, a new trend labeled "performative camping" is taking over social media, turning the dusty campsites of Palm Springs into luxury retreats.
While car camping has existed for years, 2026 has seen a surge in "over-the-top" (OTT) setups. Festival-goers are now transforming their vehicle pitches into elaborate suites featuring memory foam mattresses, LED lighting, furry rugs, and even private portable showers.
Ali Calder, 31, became a viral sensation after her TikTok tour of her "girly glamping" setup racked up millions of views. "It's half the fun," she said, noting that her $500 plot—a cheaper alternative to hotels—offered a "cool place to come back to" amid the festival’s $600 ticket price.
However the luxury aesthetic isn't just for "clout." Frequent attendees like Khadijah Brown, 25, argue that these heavy-duty setups are essential for survival. With temperatures exceeding 30°C and 25mph winds blowing thick dust through the site, the "glamour" often masks a gritty reality where campers sleep in bandanas to breathe.
Despite the high costs and harsh weather, for many, the elaborate car-camp remains the most viable way to avoid two-hour shuttle rides from hotels and ensure they actually see the artists they paid over $1,000 to hear.
