Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Habibullah has set a rare example of compassion by taking responsibility for a two-year-old child abandoned on a roadside in Morelganj, Bagerhat.
According to locals, the child was found crying alone on Friday evening, August 21 near a brick kiln in Jele Para, Ward No. 2, Barikhali Union. Her parents, Md. Palash and Mitu Akhter had divorced about three months earlier. Mitu reportedly left the child on the road before leaving for Dhaka. When locals brought the child to her grandmother she refused to take her in.
With no other option and residents brought the child to UNO Habibullah's residence. He personally cared for her bringing clothes from home, dressing her, and arranging food.
Habibullah then contacted the child's father, who was outside Morelganj at the time and promised to return within three days to complete the legal process. In the meantime, the UNO handed the child over to her aunt, Resma Khatun, along with financial support for temporary care. The father has been summoned to the UNO's office on Monday where legal steps will be taken to ensure the child's safety and future.
Local residents have widely praised Habibullah's swift compassion toward a child rejected by her own family.
