Newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir paid tribute to the martyrs of Bangladesh’s Liberation War by laying a wreath at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar on Saturday, Aug. 22.
He arrived at the memorial at about 10:30 a.m. and placed a wreath at the altar dedicated to the martyrs.
The president then stood in silence for a moment to honor those who sacrificed their lives during the 1971 Liberation War.
A smartly turned-out contingent from the Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force gave the president a guard of honor. The ceremony also featured the playing of the bugle.
After paying his respects, President Mirza Fakhrul signed the visitors’ book at the memorial.
Editorial note: The original copy contains an apparent factual inconsistency, referring to “newly appointed Acting President Major (retd.) Hafiz Uddin Bir Bikram” before returning to Mirza Fakhrul. I have omitted that conflicting reference rather than present an unverified claim as fact.
