The Appellate Division has removed from its agenda an application seeking a ban on Sarwar Alamgir, MP for Chattogram-2 from performing his duties. Attorney General Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal said this means there is no impediment to his continuing as MP. However, the court asked him to regularly pursue his appeal against the verdict validating his candidacy.

The order was passed on Wednesday by the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Zubair Rahman Chowdhury.

Attorney General Barrister Md. Ruhul Quddus Kajal represented the state. Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Advocate Ahsanul Karim appeared for BNP candidate Sarwar Alamgir while Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir represented the Jamaat candidate.

On Tuesday, the court had scheduled Wednesday for its order on the application seeking a stay on the High Court verdict that declared Alamgir's candidacy from Chattogram-2 valid in the 13th National Parliament election.

Following the High Court's earlier ruling, Alamgir had taken his oath as MP for Chattogram-2. Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed administered the oath at the Speaker's office in the National Parliament Secretariat in the presence of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
