A staff member of the Faculty of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine (ANSVM) at Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU) has been accused of brutally assaulting a stray dog, leaving the animal seriously injured. The incident, which allegedly took place on June 19, has sparked outrage and concern among students.
According to students and eyewitnesses, the incident occurred in the university's staff residential area following an allegation that the dog had caught a chicken. Abdul Kalam, an official of the faculty library, allegedly beat the animal severely, leaving it bloodied and critically injured.
Students said the dog had previously been undergoing treatment after suffering a leg injury, with veterinary care arranged by students. Following the latest incident, students again ensured emergency medical treatment for the animal. However, sources said the dog's condition remains under close observation and it is not yet considered fully out of danger.
The incident has drawn strong condemnation from students of the faculty, who alleged that the dog was repeatedly struck on the head in an apparent attempt to kill it.
They argued that if an animal causes damage or creates a nuisance, humane and scientific solutions should be sought, and that violence against animals cannot be justified under any circumstances. Students also expressed concern that such an incident allegedly took place within a veterinary faculty, where animal welfare is expected to be upheld.
Commenting on the matter, Assistant Proctor Professor Dr Md Ali Azgar said, “As soon as I learned about the incident, I contacted the university's Proctor. He assured me that an investigation committee would be formed by Sunday and that necessary action would be taken as quickly as possible.”
He urged students to remain patient until the investigation report is published and to refrain from any activities that could create an unpleasant situation on campus.
The comments of the accused staff member, Abdul Kalam, could not be obtained immediately despite efforts to contact him.
Students have demanded an impartial investigation into the incident and appropriate administrative action against anyone found responsible. They have also called on the university authorities to adopt effective long-term measures to ensure humane treatment of animals on campus.
