Popular content creator Touhid Afridi has been formally arrested and sent to jail in connection with a fraud case filed at Dhaka's Wari Police Station. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Hasan Shahadat issued the order on Monday, June 15, following a police petition. State lawyer Harun Or Rashid confirmed the development.
Earlier, the investigating officer, Wari Police Station Sub-Inspector Md. Mahfuzur Rahman, presented Afridi in court and filed a petition to formally record his arrest in this specific case. According to the petition, Afridi’s involvement emerged during the interrogation of another suspect, Nishaduzzaman Nishad. Investigators argued that arresting Afridi was critical for the ongoing probe.
State lawyer Syed Golam Murtaza Ibne Islam supported the arrest petition, while defense lawyer Iqbal Mahmud Shobhan opposed it. After hearing both sides, the court granted the police's request and ordered Afridi to be sent to jail.
The charges stem from an online scam on January 13, 2025. According to the case file, a fraud ring contacted the victim via WhatsApp and Telegram with fake job offers, persuading them to invest money in stages. The scammers initially built trust by returning small profits before ultimately embezzling Tk 235,000. Following the incident, plaintiff Syeda Ashfah Towaha Dutee filed a case against unidentified individuals at Wari Police Station.
Previously, CID police arrested Afridi in Barishal on August 24 last year. He had already been shown arrested and remanded in multiple cases linked to the anti-discrimination student movement.
