In a significant move to secure the future of frontline workers, Laxmipur Municipality has brought more than 50 sanitation workers under a life insurance scheme.
The municipality has already paid the first installment of the 15-year life insurance policies, each valued at 100,000 BDT. Under the agreement, the municipality will continue to cover 50% of the premium costs, while the workers will contribute the remaining half from their monthly earnings.
The program was officially launched on Monday afternoon during a ceremony attended by Municipal Administrator Md. Jasim Uddin and other senior officials.
Sanitation workers often work for low wages with little to no job security. For many, this insurance policy represents their first significant financial asset.
"Our salary is low, and we rarely think about the future," said one worker. "This initiative is a gift for our children and our old age. We are grateful to the authorities."
Municipal Administrator Md. Jasim Uddin emphasized that sanitation workers are the backbone of waste management.
"They receive very little after retirement, which leaves them vulnerable," he stated. "Beyond this insurance, we have also planned a housing project for them, which will be implemented soon. We want their small savings to grow into a substantial amount that provides them with dignity in their later years."
