A fire in an underground power cable near the Kodda Grid Substation in Gazipur cut electricity to the entire Konabari area for about nine hours early Thursday.
The fire broke out around 3:30am in a cable running from underground to a power pole near a bridge. The blaze damaged key power lines, forcing an immediate shutdown of electricity supply in the area.
Repair work was still underway at 12:30pm, according to Md. Jasim Uddin, AGM of Gazipur Rural Power Association. He said electricity could not be restored until the damaged cable was fully repaired.
Jasim Uddin said the fire may have been caused by attempted cable theft, which could have led to a short circuit and sparked the blaze.
Authorities rushed to the spot soon after the incident and began emergency response and repair work.
Meanwhile, Md. Shafiqul Islam, DGM of Konabari Palli Bidyut, said power supply was suspended due to severe damage to important underground cables.
“Repair work is ongoing, and efforts are being made to restore power as soon as possible,” he said, adding that restoration could take some time despite continuous work by technical teams.
The incident caused concern among local residents, though officials assured that steps were being taken to normalise the situation quickly.
Md. Saiful Islam, warehouse inspector of Konabari Modern Fire Station, said two fire service units responded immediately after receiving the alert and brought the fire under control by 5:30am.
