A 70-year-old man was hacked to death allegedly by his drug-addicted son in Lohagara Upazila of Narail on Thursday afternoon after refusing to give him money for drugs.

The incident occurred around 1:30 PM in South Para, Boyra village under Lakshmipasha Union. The victim, Afsar Sheikh died on the spot. The accused, 30-year-old Khairul Sheikh, fled the scene immediately after the attack.

According to family members and police, Khairul had long struggled with drug addiction, causing frequent domestic conflict. His father had previously expelled him from the family home due to his destructive behavior and forcing Khairul to live in rented accommodation in Lohagara town.

Khairul returned to his village home three days ago. On Thursday afternoon, he demanded money from his mother to buy drugs. When Afsar Sheikh intervened and forbade his wife from handing over any cash an enraged Khairul grabbed a sharp domestic blade (boti), attacked his father repeatedly, and escaped.

"My brother killed our father because he was refused money for drugs" said Shamim Sheikh, the victim's eldest son.

Police from Lohagara Police Station recovered the body and sent it to the Narail Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shariful Islam confirmed that an investigation is underway and a police drive has been launched to arrest the suspect. Police have also taken the victim’s wife and the suspect’s wife into custody for questioning.
