The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has announced plans to pay tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo following his retirement from international football, saying it wants to honour the country's iconic captain in the presence of supporters and the Portuguese public.
Ronaldo, the Al-Nassr star, announced his retirement from international football on Thursday (November 5). He had previously expressed his desire to continue playing for the national team. Following his announcement, the FPF issued an official statement expressing its deep gratitude and respect for the forward.
In the statement, the federation said Ronaldo had captained Portugal in 234 matches and scored 146 goals. It described him not only as an extraordinary player but also as an inspirational leader and a symbol of the national team's spirit.
Under his leadership, the federation said, Portugal experienced moments that would remain unforgettable in the country's football history.
The FPF also highlighted Ronaldo's dedication and contribution on the pitch, saying his influence had extended beyond Portugal's borders and inspired young people around the world. It added that he had brought international recognition to Portugal and become a role model for the next generation.
The federation described Ronaldo as one of the greatest players of all time.
The FPF said it did not want his departure from international football to pass without proper recognition. It pledged to take an active role in planning and organising an event to celebrate his remarkable international career.
The aim, it said, is to give supporters and the Portuguese public an opportunity to honour their captain once again.
Concluding its statement with a message of gratitude, the federation said: "Thank you for everything, Captain. This home will always be yours. Now, let's move towards the target of 1,000 goals."
