Popular Bangladeshi film actress Pori Moni secured bail on Thursday after surrendering before the Dhaka Judicial Magistrate Court-1 in an assault and vandalism case filed by businessman Nasir Uddin Mahmud.
Acting Judge Mahfuzur Rahman granted her bail on a Tk.500 bond following a short hearing. Her lawyer Nilanjana Rifat Suravi presented the bail petition which the court accepted.
The surrender came a day after the same court cancelled Pori Moni's bail and issued an arrest warrant due to her failure to appear for a scheduled witness testimony hearing on Wednesday. Defense lawyers had requested an adjournment, citing her health issues but the court granted the plaintiff's counter-petition, ruling that repeated absences wasted valuable judicial time.
Pori Moni arrived at the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court premises on Thursday morning under tight security to surrender.
The case stems from an incident on June 9, 2021 at the Dhaka Boat Club in Savar. Nasir Uddin Mahmud filed the suit in July 2021 alleging that Pori Moni and her associates assaulted him, vandalized property and issued death threats.
Following an investigation by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), charges were formally framed against Pori Moni and her costume designer Junaid Bogdadi Jimmy. Higher court challenges to the charge framing were previously dismissed and clearing the way for trial proceedings which are set to resume with witness testimony on December 23.
