Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev stated on Thursday that the recent US midterm election results are unlikely to significantly impact Moscow’s interests in the short term despite what he characterized as a political setback for President Donald Trump.

Writing on the Russian social media platform Max, Medvedev emphasized that Russia’s primary focus remains on its military objectives in Ukraine and countering Western sanctions also regardless of shifting political dynamics in Washington.

"How will this affect our interests? In the short term, I don't think it will have any major impact" Medvedev said, adding that Moscow must remain concentrated on achieving its goals on the battlefield.

Analyzing the potential geopolitical consequences, Medvedev suggested that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy might engage in consultations with the Trump administration, but questioned whether any fundamental policy changes would follow. While noting that the US possesses options to restrict satellite communications services like Starshield or limit intelligence sharing with Ukrainian forces, Medvedev argued that President Trump would likely avoid such drastic measures to prevent further domestic confrontation with a Democratic-led Congress.

Regarding Western sanctions, the former Russian president observed that Washington faces complex political trade-offs. He pointed out that imposing additional economic restrictions on Russia could trigger higher global oil prices also impacting American consumers and further complicating US foreign relations.

Medvedev added that domestic political pressure and international commitments including ongoing Middle Eastern conflicts would constrain Washington's flexibility also forcing the US administration to rely primarily on reactive measures and executive vetoes.

Concluding his assessment, Medvedev reiterated that foreign election outcomes would not alter Russia's strategic direction, asserting that Moscow will continue its military operations in Ukraine until its objective of total victory is achieved.
