An 18-year-old man has died of dengue while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Khulna, amid a continued rise in dengue cases in Paikgacha.
The deceased was Apu, also known as Munna, son of Masum Billah from the Garuikhali area of Paikgacha Upazila. He had been living with his mother in the Village Paikgacha area.
He died at around 8:30am on Saturday (September 19) while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Khulna, according to Rezaul Islam, an ambulance driver at Paikgacha Upazila Health Complex.
Apu had been working as a helper on the health complex’s ambulance for the past three months.
A few days ago, he was admitted to the Upazila Health Complex with a high fever. He tested positive for dengue and was undergoing treatment there. As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to a private hospital in Khulna on Friday night (September 18) for better treatment. He died there while undergoing treatment.
A local college teacher had also died of dengue several days earlier.
Although the upazila administration, municipality and health department have taken various measures to prevent dengue, the prevalence of the disease has not been brought under control.
Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Ahsanara Binte Ahmed said authorities are focusing on cleanliness as well as increasing public awareness.
She urged people not to ignore illness during this period and to seek medical attention promptly at the nearest health centre and follow a doctor’s advice. She also stressed the need for all family members to remain aware and cautious about dengue.
