The United States, Denmark and Greenland are set to sign a landmark security agreement next week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. The deal will grant the US a significant, permanent military presence on the Arctic island while strictly prohibiting non-NATO adversaries from building bases or making "sensitive investments."

President Donald Trump announced the breakthrough and stating the US will maintain the permanent ability to secure and defend Greenland. The agreement expands upon a 1951 treaty that already provided US overflight and basing rights. Notably, the new pact guarantees permanent US access even if Greenland eventually achieves independence also effectively shelving Trump's previous ambitions to purchase the autonomous Danish territory outright. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that the agreement permanently secures Washington’s strategic defense area in North America.

Leaders from both Denmark and Greenland have welcomed the pact. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized that the agreement strengthens common security in the North Atlantic and benefits NATO while still respecting the Kingdom's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen added that the deal acknowledges Greenland's vital interests, international role and right to self-determination.

While the exact footprint of new US military facilities remains unspecified also the diplomatic alignment marks a major geopolitical consolidation in the Arctic. Before officially entering into force, the agreement must clear standard parliamentary procedures in the respective countries.
