Laxmipur-2 MP Abul Khayer Bhuiyan has said it is unclear what demands the opposition is pursuing through its ongoing movement, alleging that they want to keep the country “in slavery” indefinitely.
He made the remarks on Saturday (September 19) while speaking as the guest of honour at a reception organised by the Laxmipur District Football Association and Club Association at the district stadium. The event was held to honour him after he was nominated as chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Addressing the opposition, Abul Khayer Bhuiyan said the current government had been in office for only six or seven months and was facing high expectations and problems in various areas.
“We have just entered the house. It takes time to fix a house—there needs to be a carpenter, an electrician and a tile worker,” he said, referring to the government’s efforts to address existing problems.
He questioned why the opposition had already started a “long march” without giving the government more time.
“We do not understand what their demands are. We also cannot understand why they have taken to the streets or what they are demanding,” he said.
The lawmaker further alleged that the opposition takes decisions on certain state matters from outside the country and follows those decisions.
“Their main issue is that there are certain matters of the state. They do not make decisions from here; they make decisions from outside. According to those decisions, they want to keep this country in slavery forever,” he said.
Bhuiyan also said irregularities had become normalised in the country in the past and that it was taking time to bring bureaucrats back within established rules.
He acknowledged that government services were still not being delivered as quickly as people expected, resulting in difficulties and harassment for some citizens.
“Many people are still frustrated. We are trying, and gradually this frustration among the people will decrease and eventually come to an end,” he said.
Abul Khayer Bhuiyan is the sitting lawmaker for Laxmipur-2. He was elected from the constituency in the 2026 parliamentary election, according to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).
The reception was chaired by Bangladesh Football Federation Vice-President Advocate Wahid Uddin Chowdhury Happy and moderated by District Sports Association Member Secretary Mohsin Kabir Swapan.
Educationist Professor Nani Gopal Ghosh, Abul Mobarak Bhuiyan, District BNP Joint Convener Hasibur Rahman, former District Sports Association member Delwar Hossain, Abdur Rab Shamim and District Football Association General Secretary Sohel Adnan, among others, attended the event.
