Brazil and Japan are set to meet Monday in one of the most anticipated Round of 32 matches of the FIFA World Cup, with both teams pursuing significant milestones.
The match at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, carries added intrigue after Japan defeated Brazil in the teams' most recent meeting, a friendly played last October. Brazil will be looking to avenge that loss, while Japan hopes to build on the result and make World Cup history.
Japan has reached the World Cup knockout stage four times but has never advanced beyond its opening knockout match. A victory over five-time world champion Brazil would give the Samurai Blue their first-ever knockout win at the tournament.
Japan's hopes have been boosted by Canada's recent breakthrough. The tournament hosts secured their first World Cup knockout victory by defeating South Africa with a stoppage-time goal to reach the Round of 16.
Historically, Brazil has dominated the matchup. The South American side has lost only once in 14 meetings with Japan and has won all four of its previous World Cup matches against teams from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
Japan, however, can take confidence from its most recent victory over Brazil, even though that result came in a friendly rather than a competitive tournament.
The Samurai Blue also face a difficult historical record against South American opposition at the World Cup. Japan has lost three of its five World Cup matches against teams from the CONMEBOL region.
Despite those statistics, head coach Hajime Moriyasu's squad has an opportunity to rewrite history. After falling short in each of its previous four World Cup knockout appearances, Japan enters Monday's match seeking its first victory in the tournament's elimination rounds.
Brazil, meanwhile, will aim to reassert its dominance and continue its pursuit of another World Cup title.
