


A Tangail court on Sunday sentenced eight people, including a father and his five sons, to life imprisonment for the 2022 murder of an elderly neighbor over a land boundary dispute.
Judge Md. Faisal Al Mamun of the 1st Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge delivered the verdict in the afternoon. The court also imposed fines on the convicts, with additional prison terms mandated for non-payment.
The convicts are Dabir Uddin (65) of Chhota Binyafair village in Tangail Sadar Upazila, his five sons—Rafiq Mia (45), Tofazzal Hossain (35), Maidan Ali (33), Hashem Ali (42), and A. Rahman (38)—Hashem’s wife Shilpi Begum (32), and their neighbor Hazrat Ali (50).
According to court records, the convicts long held a dispute with Mohammad Ali (70) over his household boundary. On the morning of July 24, 2022, the accused carried out a premeditated attack, hacking Mohammad Ali with a Chinese axe and beating him with iron rods and bamboo sticks, which led to his death.
Following the murder, the victim's daughter, Marjina Akhter, filed a case with Tangail Sadar Police Station. Sub-Inspector Md. Rehanul Islam investigated the incident and submitted a charge sheet on November 30, 2022.
Seven of the convicts were present in the courtroom during the verdict and were subsequently sent to Tangail Prison. Convict Hashem Ali remains at large.
Additional Public Prosecutor Advocate Saidur Rahman Swapan represented the state, while Advocate Shamimul Akhter Shamim defended the accused.
