Australia has secured its spot in the World Cup's Round of 32 following a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Paraguay on Thursday at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.
The result ensures the Socceroos finish second in Group D behind the United States marking their third appearance in the tournament's knockout phase. They will travel to Dallas to face the runner-up of Group G.
For Paraguay, the draw leaves them with four points and a nervous wait. The South Americans must rely on upcoming match results to see if they qualify as one of the eight best third-placed teams.
Australian head coach Tony Popovic praised his young squad's resilience. "We dominated a crucial World Cup match when everything was on the line," he said. Popovic made six bold changes to his starting lineup for this decisive game, restoring attackers Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe who were previously benched during a 2-0 defeat to the US.
The match itself was a highly physical and scrappy affair. Australia controlled the early stages with Jackson Irvine and Cristian Volpato testing Paraguay’s goalkeeper, Orlando Gill. However the Socceroos lacked a clinical finishing touch. Paraguay gradually grew into the game in the second half spurred by energetic runs from Julio Enciso but ultimately failed to break the deadlock.
Paraguay coach Gustavo Alfaro expressed disappointment with the immediate result but remains optimistic about his team's chances of reaching the knockouts.
