Germany advanced to the World Cup knockout phase for the first time since 2014 after a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Ivory Coast on Saturday.
Substitute Deniz Undav scored twice, including a stoppage-time winner, thrilling the 43,000-strong crowd in Toronto. The victory relieves mounting pressure on coach Julian Nagelsmann and ends Germany’s streak of group-stage exits.
Ivory Coast took the lead in the 30th minute when Franck Kessie scored from close range, capitalizing on a strong run by teenage prospect Yan Diomande.
Germany faced severe frustration in the first half with two disallowed goals. First, Aleksandar Pavlovic’s 21st-minute effort was ruled off for a foul on Ivorian goalkeeper Yahia Fofana. Later, Kai Havertz had a 38th-minute goal waved off due to a foul by Jamal Musiala.
Applying relentless pressure after the break, Germany finally broke through the vaunted Ivorian defense. In the 63rd minute, Undav volleyed in a cross from Nadiem Amiri to level the score. Four minutes into injury time, Undav struck again, sealing the win and sending the German fans into a frenzy.
"Winning mentality, team spirit — we had exactly what you need to be successful," Germany defender Jonathan Tah told MagentaTV. "We never gave up. The guys coming off the bench brought energy. Deniz deserves a special mention."
Ivory Coast, still seeking their first World Cup knockout appearance, can advance with a win over debutants Curacao in their final group match.
