The death toll from the bus accident at Daulatdia Ferry Ghat has risen to 26 after rescuers recovered three more bodies on Thursday.
A passenger bus carrying around 40 people fell into the Padma River on Wednesday evening while trying to board a ferry. The vehicle lost control and plunged into the river after a ferry struck the pontoon.
According to the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence, 23 bodies were recovered earlier in the day, and three more were found later, bringing the total to 26. Most of the victims have been identified and handed over to their families.
Several injured passengers were rescued and taken to nearby hospitals. At least eight people survived, while a few others are still feared missing.
Rescue operations are ongoing, involving multiple diving teams and support from the Coast Guard, naval police, army, and local administration. The sunken bus was recovered from the river several hours after the incident using a rescue vessel.
Officials said the accident occurred around 5:15 pm when a small ferry named “Hasna Hena” hit the pontoon as the bus was boarding. The impact caused the driver to lose control, and the bus fell into the river, sinking to a depth of about 60 feet.
Eyewitnesses said some passengers managed to swim to safety immediately after the crash.
The scene at the riverbank remains heartbreaking, with relatives gathering and waiting for news of missing loved ones. Many families have already received the bodies of their relatives, while others continue to search.
Authorities have urged people to contact officials if any family members remain missing. An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the accident.
