Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain and State Minister Dr. M. A. Muhith conducted a surprise inspection of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) on Sunday morning. The visit, aimed at assessing patient care standards, revealed significant operational failures and unhygienic conditions.
During the inspection, the ministers observed a disturbing lack of cleanliness, noting the presence of cockroaches and bedbugs in patient wards. Minister Hossain expressed sharp dissatisfaction with the hospital's leadership, stating that those in charge have failed to fulfill their administrative duties.
"This hospital, above all others, must be a place of compassion and humanity," Hossain said, emphasizing that the current environment falls far below government standards.
State Minister Dr. M. A. Muhith echoed these concerns, identifying a "leadership crisis" and chronic mismanagement at the nation’s premier mental health facility. Despite the grim findings, Minister Hossain assured the public that the government would take immediate steps to resolve these issues and restore the hospital's integrity.
