Prime Minister Tarique Rahman left Dhaka for New York on Monday morning to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Leading a 26-member high-level delegation, the Prime Minister departed on a Turkish Airlines flight accompanied by his wife Dr. Zubaida Rahman.
The Prime Minister will address the UNGA in Bangla on September 24. His speech will focus on Bangladesh’s democratic renewal, the Rohingya crisis, climate vulnerability and economic cooperation. Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam noted this visit is historic, marking the new administration’s global debut while Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister simultaneously presides over this year's UNGA session.
The premier’s official engagements begin on September 22 with a welcome breakfast hosted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and an evening reception hosted by the US President.
On September 23, PM will advocate for the swift repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar during a dedicated side event. He will also join high-level meetings focused on climate finance, global inequality and a "Just Transition." The following day alongside his general debate address, he will open a critical discussion on the existential threats of sea-level rise and headline an event on maternal and newborn health.
Beyond the UN agenda Prime Minister will conduct intensive diplomatic and economic talks. He is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with leaders from Kuwait, Pakistan, Bhutan, Croatia, Thailand and Haiti. He will also meet with the UN Secretary-General, the World Bank President and top corporate representatives from Wall Street and Meta to foster economic ties.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to conclude his visit and depart for Dhaka on the night of September 25.
