Captain Marquinhos scored a late winner to secure a 2-1 victory for Paris St Germain against troubled Olympique de Marseille on Sunday. The defeat condemned the hosts to their fifth consecutive loss across all competitions also pushing them into the Ligue 1 relegation zone.
Following a competitive first half where Marseille’s Neil Maupay missed two clear chances the PSG intensified their attacks after the break. Substitute Ferran Torres broke the deadlock in the 67th minute with expertly heading home a cross from Desire Doue. The Spanish forward has now netted seven goals since joining from Barcelona this season.
Marseille responded quickly in Just five minutes later substitute Angel Gomes controlled a pass from Amine Gouiri and finished from close range to level the score. However the home crowd's joy at the Stade Velodrome was short-lived. In the 74th minute, Marquinhos bundled the ball over the line from a Nuno Mendes cross to restore PSG's lead.
Marseille’s miserable night worsened when captain Timothy Weah was sent off after receiving a second yellow card. The team now sits second from the bottom in the league standings, having suffered four domestic defeats and a recent Europa League loss to Besiktas. Meanwhile, the crucial away win lifts PSG to sixth place after a sluggish start to their campaign.
In other Ligue 1 action on Sunday, struggling Nice claimed their first victory of the season beating Lille 2-1 to climb off the bottom of the table. Elsewhere the Auxerre secured a 2-1 comeback win over Stade Brestois taking all three points thanks to a Raphael le Guen own goal.
